In the painting “In a Fool” the artist reproduces a scene that is often quoted in cinema and popular culture: several men at the table are playing cards. Although their images are quite generalized, the associations with the criminal world come up fast. An atmosphere of risk and excitement is supported by the rich scarlet background. In the recognizable scene the artist introduces elements that expand the field of interpretation: the colored nails of the players, the “half-done” character sitting with his back to the viewer, and the plant pattern successfully merging with the background. A graphite island on a picturesque surface disturbs the uniformity of the picture — another dimension seems to appear over the player’s shoulder.
