Elena Artemenko was born in 1988 in Krasnodar, graduated from the Department of Journalism of Kuban State University, and received her artistic education at the Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia. She started working with video, gradually turning to sculpture, where the materials and their properties — silicone, metal, marble – were of particular interest to her. She was nominated twice for the Kandinsky Prize (2013, 2014) and participated twice in the Moscow International Biennale for Young Art (2010, 2017). A series of sculptures “Marble” is an example of a very successful and ironic game with the material. What do we associate marble with? Well, a childhood game, countertops, or the especially rare pink form from Untersberg of course. No matter which, it’s fun, useful, sophisticated and can be highly valuable. Lena takes this material and completely transforms those typical associations into sausage. Or a slice of bread? These pieces combine that which is beautiful and memory-filled into a concept so delicious you’d lose out not to consider it for your plate.
