The painting was a part of the “Pahan’s Autumn” exhibition at Moscow’s Dordor Gallery, which was censored by law enforcement officials. The watercolor depicts a naked woman and a Cossack at the moment of the force being applied. The positions of their bodies repeat each other forming a rhythm — their movements are informed by the choreography of violence and resistance. The balance of power in this dance is obvious: a woman’s body is open and vulnerable, while a man is dressed in a uniform, a sign of power and control. The strong image created by the artist reflects upon contemporary Russia.
