Aleksandr Chursin was born in 1988 in Krasnodar and graduated in 2012 from the Academy of Art and Industry at the Krasnodar State Institute of Culture and Arts. Since 2009, he’s been a member of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia, a Russian government scholar, and took part in the “Dialogues with Classics” project under the supervision of Diana Machulina. He specializes in painting: combining themes of pop culture and their careful realistic elaboration in a postmodernist style. Chursin often turns to Hitchcock in his work. He values the American director as a master of suspense — for both of them it’s sort of a calling card. Using postmodern painting techniques, Chursin creates an alarming atmosphere of expectancy. Chursin’s “The Second Portrait of Hitchcock” and “Retro Mercury” use culminating shots from the American director’s most famous film to complement his own signature, dizzying pattern of red and white stripes to emphasize the tension of uncertainty.
