The artist creates a sad icon of the Russian identity. The image used by the artist is borrowed from the icon of the Mother of God (Softener of Evil Hearts). Icons of the Virgin feature a certain scheme of symbols to which the artist strictly adheres. The saint is depicted up to the waist, hands on the chest; it is a three- quarter view. The author tries to make the most of the traditional techniques used in iconography. However, he fills the empty outline of the face of the Virgin with the familiar image. The seven swords piercing the heart of the Virgin symbolize the seven sins that took possession of human souls. The icon calls to us to plead for our enemies softening hostile feelings and giving way to kindness.
