The Recycle group was founded in Krasnodar in 2008 by Andrei Blokhin and Egor Kuznetsov. Both artists graduated from the Academy of Arts and Industry at Krasnodar State University of Culture and Arts. They focus on sculpture, installations and digital objects that explore the interaction between technology, culture and human beings. They are laureates of the Kandinsky Prize (2010) and participants of the Russian pavilion of the 57th Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art (2017). From the Coordinates 0.0. project, “Recycle” portrays the ghostliness of information flow with a piece devoted to the so-called zero island – the place where zero coordinates of longitude and latitude converge. Physically, it is a point in the ocean where there is nothing but raging waters; yet symbolically where a huge amount of information flow converges. Zero coordinates often indicate lost objects, from bicycles to people. These chrome, plastic sculptures simultaneously refer to the texture of water and to ghostly people. But do they really exist? In the world of social networks, bots and information wars, that line grows thinner.
