Aleksandr Savko was born in 1957 in Bender City (Moldova) and graduated in 1981 from the department of scenic design at the Odessa School of Theatre and Art. His recognizable, ironic style can be defined as neo-pop art — the aesthetics of Western glamour meet the heroes of the Soviet and post-Soviet era. He was a participant of the Tsetinsk Biennale (1997), exhibition of Russian artists “Dialogue” in Paris (1989), and nominee of the Kandinsky Prize. At the heart of the “American midday” lies a central post-modernist method — the palimpsest, in which a recognizable, classic work of art is complemented by new images. The famous “Italian Midday” (1827) by Karl Bryullov acquires American features from Savko: dollars appear on berries and grape leaves, and a dark Italian woman turns into a white-toothed pin-up model glorifying the values of the new era.
