Zinaida Isupova was born in Kiev in 1996, studied painting and sculpture, and graduated from the Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia. In her projects, she combines traditional techniques — painting, working with clay and plaster, and a conceptual approach, exploring how the media influences our understanding of reality. In 2016, Zinaida was awarded the prize of the French Institute and the Embassy of France in Russia for her first solo exhibition “Carried away” at the “Start” venue (Winery, Moscow). A series of paintings, “The Area of Inauthenticity” — shown at her solo exhibition in the “Fragment” gallery in Moscow — is about the information environment formed by the media. Paintings depicting soldiers and generals repeat the traditional composition of the ceremonial full-dress portrait, but are deprived of the very “portraits” themselves — the faces. For Zinaida, this is a representation of how we view military conflicts from TV and tablets — there are no specific people, only their function expressed in their form. This idea is underlined by the technique: the form, detailed with acrylic, contrasts with the white, as if absent, background of plaster.
