Vasilii Subbotin was born in 1991 in Krasnodar. He studied at the Art and Industry Academy of the Krasnodar State Institute of Culture and Arts. Co-founder of the ZIP group, he works with different media (painting, sculpture, installation), often addressing historical characters who have become objects of popular culture. The sculpture of Yuri Gagarin continues Subbotin’s series, “Leaders” – portraits of significant characters of Russian history, where politicians coexist with legendary personalities. Gagarin is one of the most popular Soviet characters and a rare person, whose achievements are unequivocally positive. Gagarin seems frozen in a simultaneously joyful and surprised daze - perhaps the expression he gave as the first man to see space with his own eyes.
