Angelina Merenkova was born in Moscow in 1988. She graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University, “Free Workshops” School at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, and the Baza Institute of Contemporary Art. She is currently studying at the Department of Plastic Arts at the University of Paris VIII (Université de Vincennes à Saint-Denis) in Paris. She is engaged in painting, photography, installation and sculpture, but she became famous thanks to her embroidery reminiscent of banners where images of Soviet ideology are revealed sexually. Angelina Merenkova’s latest embroidery uses her famous methods. In this case, a Soviet-flag-red paper canvas is filled with recognizable symbols of Soviet power — a laurel wreath, stars, a rocket. But these symbols do not combine into the propaganda canvas, rather into an almost erotic figure. Such a comparison of images may remind us of social art, but it seems that Angelina’s work touches upon a much wider range of topics — from the attractiveness of power to taboo desires.
