Vladimir Kolesnikov was born in Krasnodar in 1969, studying at the Krasnodar Art School and Kuban State University. Kolesnikov uses a special self-developed technique with oil-based pastels, oil and acrylic, giving his canvases the resemblance of old prints or Italian drawings. This technique is thematically complemented by symbols of modern mass culture — an iconic characteristic of postmodern techniques. Kolesnikov’s works are in the collections of “Capital Group”, Pierre Brochet, Umar Dzhabrailov, Vladimir Nekrasov and others. Vladimir Kolesnikov’s new work “Cry” creates a dialogue between popular symbols of different times. The central image of Norwegian painter Edvard Munch’s famous 1893 creation is replaced with the main character of the comedy “Home Alone” (1990). At first glance, it might seem that Kolesnikov’s “Cry” is a comparison of high and low culture, but which of the two images is more renowned — Munch’s alarming omen of disaster now found on almost any souvenir surface, from mugs to bed sheets, or an after-shave reaction performed by a young Macaulay Culkin that’s spawned imitation to this day? In his paradoxical comparison of the two images, Kolesnikov manages to tip his hat to the essence of postmodernism, where the difference between low and high culture is erased.
