Depiction of a skull is traditionally symbolic: it implies both evanescence of life and threat warning, as well as life force encased in the head. The following explanation given by medieval alchemists is, in our opinion, to the fullest extent applicable to this piece of art: skull is like a slag, a useless residue of magic ingredients fermented in a retort which were imbued with “demonic” essence while they were still living.
